Ian has a BSc and PhD in microbiology from University College London and is a Registered Nutritionist. He worked for many years as a toxicologist at the British Industrial Biological Research Association in Carshalton UK, before moving to the University of Ulster in Coleraine as Head of the Northern Ireland Centre for Food and Health. He is currently Professor of Human Nutrition and Head of the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Nutrition in the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Reading, UK. His current research areas include the development of biomarkers for assessing cancer risk and using such markers to investigate the role of diet in prevention of colon, breast, and prostate cancers. In particular, he is interested in the anti-cancer effects of phytoestrogens and other phytochemicals (glucosinolates and flavonoids) and is using both in vitro approaches and human dietary intervention trials. He is also conducting research into the health benefits of probiotics and prebiotics, including their influence on colorectal cancer. He is the author of over 200 papers and was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Gent for his work on nutrition and cancer risk.
