ANSWERED QUESTIONS

Are soyfoods recommended for toddlers and older children?

Answered by Mona Rosene, MS, RD - October 1, 2010

The nutrient-rich profile of many soyfoods can make them a healthy addition to the diets of children of all ages. Many soyfoods provide high-quality soy protein that is low in saturated fat. Additionally, fortified soyfoods such as soymilk provide calcium and vitamin D, important nutrients for growing children. Both the USDA’s 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and 2005 MyPyramid for Kids identify fortified soymilk as a nutritious choice for helping to meet calcium needs.1, 2 Before introducing a new food into your child’s diet, always consult your healthcare provider.
