ANSWERED QUESTIONS

Is soy protein a complete protein?

Answered by Mona Rosene, MS, RD - October 1, 2010

Yes, soy protein is the only commonly consumed plant protein that is equivalent in quality to animal protein. Soy protein contains all nine amino acids in sufficient quantities to meet the body’s needs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture evaluates protein quality using the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acids Score (PDCAAS). PDCAAS measures the amino acid pattern of proteins as well as digestibility. Soy protein has a PDCAAS score of 1.0, which is equivalent to animal proteins such as egg whites and meat.1
